うみラボ 一般社団法人うみの考古学ラボ

English

To promote the research and protection of maritime and underwater cultural heritage (UCH) of Japan and around the world, the Maritime Archaeology Lab was established in October 2021. The understanding of the significance of UCH is not widely recognized in the country. The Japanese government has no competent authority nor is a personnel specialized in UCH. It is believed that a large number of UCH is being destroyed in the country. This organization hopes to change this situation.
The founder, Randy (Randall) Sasaki, has received a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University through Nautical Archaeology Program. He has conducted many field works in Japan and other countries.
The organization focuses on education. The main activities of the organization is lecture series for public schools and universities. Also, the organization act as a consulting agency for the local municipalities in conducting a field work related to survey, conservation, and out-reach program related to UCH. The work conducted by the organization follows the UNESCO manual for the protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage.
We are also keen on deepening the understanding of our shared cultural heritage found under the waves. We are seeking partnership with International organizations. Please do not hesitate to ask us any questions regarding the UCH within Japan, and such heritage sites abroad.
